Overview of the Customer

Trent Limited is the retail arm of the Tata Group, headquartered in Mumbai and listed on the BSE and NSE. It operates Westside, its fashion and lifestyle chain; Zudio, its fast-growing value fashion format, which trades from several hundred stores spread across more than 230 cities; and Star, its food and grocery business. Between Westside and Zudio alone the company runs over a thousand large-format stores nationally, and continues to open more each year. Group shared services, including IT procurement, are handled through Fiora Services.

A store network on that scale carries a large and constantly moving IT estate: point-of-sale terminals, back-office desktops, networking hardware, printers and peripherals, distributed across hundreds of sites and regularly relocated, serviced or replaced as stores open and refit. Tracking that estate depends on every device carrying an asset tag that stays legible and scannable for the equipment’s whole service life — through handling, cleaning, transport and years of wear. Trent’s IT procurement team therefore needed more than labels: it needed the right combination of printer, label material and ribbon chemistry. SNA Infotech, already a barcode supplier to the group, was asked to put the complete solution together.

Scope of Work

• Barcode printer: TSC TE310 (300 DPI) desktop barcode printer for in-house tag printing.
• Asset tag labels: PVC labels, 50mm x 25mm.
• Ribbon: Resin ribbon R-100, 110mm x 130m, matched to PVC labels.
• Printing options: Supplied blank for in-house printing, or pre-printed and sequenced at SNA’s own facility.
• Scalable supply: Volumes scalable from pilot batches to lakh-scale production runs.

The Requirements

• Durability: Asset tags had to resist handling and wear over the life of the asset.
• Print quality: 300 DPI printing for crisp, scannable barcodes on small tags.
• Single-source compatibility: Printer, label and ribbon from one supplier, so the three are guaranteed to work together rather than assembled from separate vendors.
• Short delivery window: Material required within the same week, against a live tagging schedule.

The Solution

A. Durable Label-Ribbon Combination

SNA Infotech recommended PVC labels with a resin ribbon — a combination suited to long-life asset tags that need to resist scratching and smudging.

B. Matched Printer

A TSC TE310 300 DPI printer was proposed so Trent IT could print tags in-house at high resolution.

C. Pre-printed, Ready-to-Apply Option

SNA also offered the tags pre-printed and sequenced at its own plant, so they arrive ready to apply — removing printer setup, ribbon handling and print-quality checking from the IT team’s workload entirely.

D. In-House Manufacturing Control

Because the labels are converted at SNA’s own facility, tag size, material and adhesive are specified to the asset types being tagged, and repeat batches match the first one.
